Finally, winter is over, and summer is here. It’s time to break out the grill, the sunblock, the shorts, and the pool. If you spent the winter hibernating and working through spring, you may be feeling a little burned out. The fall and winter seasons can exacerbate certain mental conditions, such as depression. It’s time to focus on summer self-care for men to improve your mental and physical health.

Summer Self-Care for Men Tips

Before you head out to enjoy the weather, consider the following summer self-care tips for men. If you struggle with anxiety, use this time to rest and recharge. Depression can also present itself as persistent sadness and isolation. Use this summer to reconnect with friends and family.

Enjoy the Outdoors

Unless there is a heat advisory, enjoy the outdoors. Get into nature with walks, bike riding, pickleball, tennis, and other sports. If you like the water, go fishing, kayaking, boating, or spend the day at the pool or beach. Nature has a way of grounding us in the present and lifting our mood.

Use SPF

Men can burn just as easily as women, but sunburn is not the only reason to protect yourself this summer. Skin cancers are on the rise. Wear a hat and clothing that blocks the sun’s harmful UV rays. SPF 30 or higher is best, but if you play sports or sweat excessively, consider SPF 70 or higher. Reapply as necessary.

Stay Hydrated

Heat stroke and exhaustion are common, especially in drier climates or during a heat wave. Drink plenty of water or electrolyte-rich drinks if you will be sweating. Ask your physician what amount of water is safest, as this amount varies from person to person.

Know Your Medication’s Sun Warnings

Some medications come with warnings about spending too much time in the sun. These medications can cause you to become dehydrated quickly, dizzy, lightheaded, and more sensitive to the sun. In some cases, the medication may not absorb properly. Consult your pharmacist about the side effects of your medication before spending extended time outdoors.

Care for Your Beard

Care for your beard during the summer, as heat, sweat, and oil can cause skin reactions, including redness, itching, and lesions. Use a conditioning shampoo formulated for beards or a beard wash. Follow up with a skin cleanser and moisturizer for the rest of your face, especially after using sunscreen.

Stick to Your Bedtime

It’s tempting to stay up every night during the summer, especially after the kids go to bed. But for your mental health, consider sticking to your bedtime most nights of the week. Sleep deprivation keeps the brain from recovering and completing processes necessary to regulate mood, fight anxiety, depression, and irritability, and normalize appetite.

Take Small Breaks Throughout the Day

Take small breaks throughout the day, whether you are working or playing, indoors or outdoors, at home or in the office. A small pause allows you to practice deep breathing, relaxation techniques, or do something for yourself.
